Malta Ring Mark
Secondhand Ring Question: Hi, I have recently acquired a secondhand ring. I was told it was gold, set with an opal and white sapphires, and had originally been purchased in Malta.
Bella Beaded Jewelry: Artful Italian Designs with Wire, Thread, Cord & Ribbon
Price: $9.49
The only mark I can make out is ‘750′ stamped inside the band, and a single stamp, which I can’t make out, further round the inside of the band.
Does it sound as if it is likely to be gold - and how can I tell if they clear stones are white sapphires - they are clear and bright and reflect the colours of the opal beautifully.
Hope you can advise.
Carolyn
Answer: G’day Carolyn and many thanks for your query.
First I should apologize for the delay in getting back to you. As you may know President Bush was here in Australia over the weekend for the APEC conference, so the Aussie Government (bless ‘em) gave everyone a long weekend break, so I went away for a couple of days and only just got back. Blame Bush - not me
The 750 mark is the International Hallmark for 18 carat gold and normally the other mark is the Maltese Cross. Use on old toothbrush to clean around the marks and an eyeglass to see it clearly.
I am surprised you think they are white sapphire? as they have traditionally been used as a diamond ‘look-alike’ and would not have been seen in quality jewelry.
Of course I can’t see it, feel it, measure or test it, so the only way you are going to know is take it to your local FRIENDLY jeweler/ gemologist / valuer and have the item fully appraiser. It will cost, but at least you will have a full written report and can stop guessing.
BTW - Opal is the best gemstone in the world!
