Jeweler Damage

October 12, 2007 By: David Category: General Resources No Comments →

Jeweler Damage Question: Recently I had taken my Apatite & Diamond ring to the jeweler for appraisal (for insurance) and possible resizing.

Jewellery Manufacture and Repair

Price: $19.51

I have been collecting jewelry and loose gems for years, this was not purchased as a piece to be worn regularly, as I know it is a soft stone. I just fell in love with the colour!

I have run into a problem with the jeweler and don’t know what to do.

I believe the stone was subjected to heat and/or chemicals: the colour is muddied and cloudy… It is ruined.

It was sized before the appraisal was done.

The jeweler was very defensive when I spoke to him, and he appraised the stone as Topaz. He said he thought it was poor quality Topaz and was not able to measure the RI, so he assumed it was Topaz.

I regularly use my refractometer and I know the refractive index for the two stone are not the same, nor do they overlap.

He has yet to tell me how he plans to make this right. I feel he should have notified me immediately after damaging the stone (they never did tell me) and that he should have never “guessed” what it was.

I would have more respect for a jeweler that would refuse to reset a stone, or who told me he was unable to determine what the stone was.

If the jeweler does not replace the damaged stone, do I have any recourse?

I have many, many gems and jewelry needing appraised (some purchased, some inherited) and am now quite nervous about this or any jeweler.

Remaking Platinum Rings

October 10, 2007 By: David Category: General Resources No Comments →

Remaking platinum rings Question: Hi! I recently inherited a platinum three ring bridal set.

The Encyclopedia of Jewelry-Making Techniques: A Comprehensive Visual Guide to Traditional and Contemporary Techniques

Price: $15.08

Since I already have my own bridal set and the diamonds on this set are very nice, I was interested in turning the set into one nice right hand ring.

I took my design and the rings to a local jeweler and he told me that the platinum could not be melted down and re-used like gold. Is this correct?

After seeing one of your previous responses about some platinum jewelry already having been another piece of jewelry, I am thinking I need to see another jeweler.

He said that platinum loses its properties when it is melted down.

Can I still use the metal from this set?

Thanks, Brenda

Selling A Platinum Ring

October 09, 2007 By: David Category: General Resources 2 Comments →

Selling a platinum ring for a white gold wedding set Question: 2 years ago my fiance proposed and gave me a platinum ring 3 princess cut diamonds.

Gold & Platinum Jewelry Buying Guide

Price: $74.81

We are getting married in 5 months and do not have it in our budget to buy a platinum wedding band to match.

I was told that I could go to a jeweler and sell them the platinum from my (engagement ring) band and use the diamonds to create a custom wedding set in white gold.

Can this really be done and if so how do I know where to go?

Is this a good idea?

Testimonials

Testimonials from our clients:

Sometimes we get email messages unexpectedly, like this one from Lisa Kaluski in California…

Strangely it came after she couldn’t get into her Valuation Appraisal Kit after making a prompt payment with Paypal.

She even wrote to us saying “I do hope you’re not a scam…” and was clearly upset.

We soon discovered the problem and got back to her within 24hrs. After she successfully completed her Self Appraisal Kit, she wrote again….

Testimonial from Lisa Kaluski
“I must say, it’s great to see that there are people who still run their business in such a caring honest way. You guys are the best! I’ll be recommending your site to others.”
